Updates on summer programs and COVID-19

Dear friends of WCLEC, Kursa, and Mezotne,

We hope that you are managing through this global crisis and taking good care of yourselves and your loved ones. Our thoughts are with you during this challenging time.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the decision to cancel summer activities at the West Coast Latvian Education Center for 2020, including Talka, Jāņi, Kursa and Mežotne.

The nature of the camp environment is in direct conflict with social distancing requirements that are still in place in Washington State, and may remain in effect well into summer. Gathering with friends, family, and our community still poses significant risk to children and adults, and with the continued lack of testing kits and the absence of a vaccine, we remain unable to offer an acceptable and safe way to proceed with in-person gatherings and camp routines. However, we are exploring options to stay connected virtually, and individual programs may reach out about those opportunities.

Due to the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19 precautions and the best available data from experts, this decision is a reflection of our strong commitment to the health and safety of our campers, volunteers, staff, and all WCLEC supporters. Any deposits and fees you have paid for summer programs will be fully refunded.

Now more than ever, we are craving the connection and pure joy that camp brings to our summers and we sincerely hope that we can return to our favorite spot in the woods very soon.
